SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
Amendment moves forward
"A proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage won approval Monday in a House committee.
The resolution, filed by Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, would allow Texas voters to decide whether to amend the constitution to define marriage as a union only between one man and one woman. The measure now moves to the full House.
Chisum has said it wasn't his intent that the proposed amendment prevent gay couples from arrangements such as joint property ownership or power of attorney. Putting the same-sex marriage ban in the constitution would be an attempt to prevent legal challenges to the state Defense of Marriage Act, which became law two years ago."
